Simplicity:
The technology included in the architecture of COLDSTORE 2U Pro, in terms of concept and usage, offers a high reliability system even when using the lowest-cost disks available. Our unique Sequential File System (SFS) combined with Linear Array Idle Disks (LAID™) system produces a powerful and simple system that provides very large capacities at very low costs. The management of the system is extremely simple, with all disk installation and configuration being fully automatic. End-users can add, remove, replace, and even upgrade disks without stopping data recording. The management of COLDSTORE 2U Pro is straightforward. There is no data loss in case of disk failure without the need for rebuilds. Unprecedented reliability - even with low-cost disks.
Sequential Recording:
Disks are used sequentially, with all unused disks spun down, saving power and thus significantly reducing the three main disk killers: temperature, vibration, and wear. The system uses a unique mirrored overlapping dual-write model to ensure full data redundancy during critical writing operations, yet it doesn't require twice the number of drives as fully mirrored RAID1 systems.
Power Efficiency:
COLDSTORE 2U Pro takes advantage of the fact that only about 3% of video data is ever replayed, thus (on average) 87% of each disk is spun down. SFS™ controls the disk read/write heads, moving the disk like a vinyl record player to virtually eliminate disk vibration. Combining LAID™ and SFS™ with a specially designed low-power main CPU board results in a disk array that consumes as little as 50 watts even in a fully populated 160TB array that requires almost no cooling. There are times when it may be necessary to have all drives running simultaneously for extended periods (e.g., during a bulk search operation), and COLDSTORE 2U Pro is designed to handle this with ease, with a well-specified power supply - dual hot-swappable PSUs and temperature-controlled chassis cooling fans. Even in this mode, COLDSTORE 2U Pro consumes a maximum of 120 watts - three times more efficient than typical RAID systems.
Disk Types and Physical Location of Data:
COLDSTORE 2U Pro can use any brand and size of SATA disk, and indeed any mix of disks. Disks can be added "on the fly" and automatically included in the array. Disks can also be removed at any time, and due to the strictly sequential writing model, the time range of any disk's recordings can be viewed on the front panel. This allows for simple physical localization (and removal) of any particular recording for evidential purposes. Such simple yet powerful features allow disks in the array to be managed easily by end-users themselves.
Operating Modes:
COLDSTORE 2U Pro can operate not only in mirrored overlapping dual mode but also in single sequential disk mode and sequential mirrored dual mode (i.e., sequential RAID1) when required. These operating modes continue to take advantage of the power-saving, low-temperature, low-vibration, and low-wear characteristics of LAID and SFS, including simple disk management and instant evidence retrieval.
Integration with Video Recording and Management Systems:
Veracity provides a simple SDK to DVR/NVR manufacturers who wish to provide the benefits of COLDSTORE 2U Pro to end-users. Direct control of COLDSTORE 2U Pro through a defined network protocol is an alternative integration method. COLDSTORE 2U Pro is delivered with a full configuration and management application. Once configured, disks can be removed and replaced at any time without the need for reconfiguration. Array management can also be performed directly through the front panel controls. The front panel is also used to display array status, disk capacities, disk time ranges, and IP address.
